Mitchell Tanager 3 SW Boat Combo 7 100-300g 2pc + 5000 Reel

If you prefer a more compact, maneuverable setup for the tight confines of a busy charter boat, the Mitchell Tanager 3 SW 7 Boat Combo is the ideal short-range powerhouse. Here at Gerrys Fishing, we know that while longer rods have their place, a 7ft rod offers superior leverage, making it much easier to pump a heavy fish up from the depths without tiring out your arms. This is a perfectly balanced, saltwater-ready kit designed to take the guesswork out of choosing a rod and reel.

Product Details & Uses

The Tanager 3 SW Boat rod features a responsive graphite blank that bridges the gap between sensitivity and raw power. With a 100-300g rating, this rod is built for heavy-duty vertical work. It has a sensitive enough tip to show you the knock-knock of a pouting or whiting, but once that tip folds away, you are met with a massive backbone capable of stopping a hard-fighting Cod or Ling.

The combo is equipped with a 5000-size Tanager SW reel. This size is the sweet spot for many boat anglersits lighter and more comfortable to hold all day than a 6000 or 7000 size, yet it still packs 4 stainless steel ball bearings and a powerful drag system. The CNC machined aluminum spool is built to handle the pressures of braided line, and the saltwater-proof guides ensure that the corrosive sea environment wont end your session early.

Prime Locations & Uses:

• General Boat Wrecking: A fantastic choice for working heavy pirks and large soft plastics over deep wreckage.

• Charter Boat All-Rounder: Perfect for the angler who wants a versatile setup that can handle anything from Mackerel feathering to heavy-duty bait fishing.

• Deep-Water Cod & Ling: The 7ft length gives you the mechanical advantage needed to lift heavy fish off the bottom quickly.

• Norway Light-Tackle Jigging: An excellent, budget-friendly entry into Scandinavian fishing for those targeting Cod and Coalfish with jigs up to 300g.

Gerrys Pro Tip

The 7ft version of the Tanager combo is all about control. On a crowded boat, a shorter rod is much easier to manage when landing fish or re-rigging. My advice? Pair this with a 30lb40lb braid. Because the blank is graphite, the lack of stretch in the braid will transmit every single vibration directly to your hand. At 7 feet, youll find it much easier to apply direct pressure to a fish thats trying to dive back into the snag. Its a tough, no-nonsense bit of kit!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is the 5000 reel big enough for deep water?

A: Yes, absolutely. While the 6000 holds more line, a 5000 size reel spooled with modern, thin diameter braid will hold more than enough line for the vast majority of UK wrecking and deep-water marks. It also makes the whole setup feel much lighter and more balanced in the hand.

Q: Can this handle a Halibut?

A: It certainly can. While it isnt an 80lb-class monster rod, the 300g backbone is more than enough to handle mid-sized Halibut and specimen Cod. The 7ft length actually gives you better leverage over a big fish than a longer rod would.

Q: Does it come with a rod bag?

A: Yes, the combo usually comes in a clear branded sleeve or bag to keep the sections together and protected during transport to and from the boat.

Q: Is the blank made of solid glass or carbon?

A: This model uses a graphite (carbon) composite blank, which is why it feels so much lighter and snappier than traditional glass boat rods. It gives you much better bite detection and a faster hook-set.
