Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 Boat Rod 74 20-30lb

The Ugly Stik GX2 Boat is arguably the most popular all-round boat rod in the UK. Here at Gerrys Fishing, this is our top pick for the angler who wants one rod to do it all. It follows the legendary Ugly Stik tradition of being virtually indestructible while offering a lighter, more modern feel than its predecessors. Whether you are drifting for Bass or winching up double-figure Cod, the GX2 is the ultimate workhorse that refuses to quit.

Product Details & Uses

The 20-30lb model is the Goldilocks of the GX2 rangeit is light enough to feel the rattle of a Whiting but has the backbone to stop a hard-running Tope. Built with Ugly Tech Construction, it features a graphite and fiberglass hybrid blank that provides a smooth, progressive action. This action is essential for the modern angler as it cushions the direct, no-stretch feel of braided lines, significantly reducing the chance of hook-pulls during a fight.

The signature Clear Glass Tip is fused into the blank to provide unmatched sensitivity and is famously unbreakable. The rod is fitted with braid-friendly guides and a carbon reel seat that keeps your multiplier or fixed spool reel locked in tight. Like the heavier models, it features an extra-long EVA foregrip, allowing you to find a comfortable hand position whether you are feathering for mackerel or leaning into a specimen fish.

Prime Locations & Uses:

• The UK All-Rounder: Perfect for 90% of UK boat fishing, from general reef drifting to light-to-mid wrecking.

• Targeting Specimen Fish: Ideal for Tope, Big Cod, Pollack, and Rays. It has the grunt in the butt section to move heavy fish off the bottom.

• Bassing with Lures: The 74 length and sensitive tip make it a great choice for working shads or live-baited eels for Bass.

• Beginner to Pro: Because it is so durable and versatile, it is just as popular with charter boat regulars as it is with those buying their first serious boat rod.

Gerrys Pro Tip

Gerrys highly recommends this rod as the best value-for-money investment you can make. My advice? If you only buy one boat rod this year, make it the 20-30lb GX2. Its light enough to hold all day without fatigue, but it wont let you down if a surprise 40lb Tope takes your bait. The extra-long foregrip is a subtle touch that makes a huge difference when you need to put some poke into a fight. Its a winner, plain and simple!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is this rod suitable for use with a fixed spool reel?

A: While primarily designed for multiplier reels, the guide spacing and reel seat on the GX2 are versatile enough that it can be used with a large, heavy-duty fixed spool reel if preferred.

Q: How tough is it really?

A: The Ugly Stik is world-famous for its durability. While we dont suggest trying it, these rods can often be bent almost double without snapping. This makes them perfect for the rough and tumble of a busy boat deck.

Q: Can I use this for deep-water wrecking?

A: For general wrecking in moderate tides with leads up to 10-12oz, its fantastic. If you are heading to the deepest wrecks with 1.5lb+ leads, you might want to look at the 30-50lb version for the extra stiffness.

Q: Why is it 74 instead of the standard 7?

A: The extra 4 inches provides a slightly better casting arc for flicking baits away from the boat and offers a bit more reach when trying to guide a big fish around the boats outboard or anchor rope.
